Smart Gardening for Active Ageing
During summer 2024, I had the honour of representing Imperial College London at the first International Design Education Laboratory (EduLab), hosted by Tsinghua University in Qingdao, China.

The Challenge
Designing a desirable 2050
We were challenged to imagine a positive future where older adults live longer, healthier, and more connected lives.
Adapting to ageing populations
With the majority of people aged 65+, the future demands inclusive systems that support autonomy and well-being.
Promoting plant-based care
Gardening and plant care were key drivers of hygiene, routine, and emotional resilience in our future vision.
Our Solution
KewBot is a modular smart gardening system designed to promote active ageing in urban environments. It enhances physical well-being, mental stimulation, and social connection through interactive and automated plant care experiences.
Guided Gardening
Voice and projection interfaces guide users through simple planting, watering, and harvesting routines tailored to elderly capabilities.
Modular Vertical System
Adaptable, wall-mounted modules allow for space-efficient plant growth inside small urban flats.
Physical & Cognitive Engagement
Encourages daily gentle movement, sensory interaction, and mental focus through hands-on care rituals.
Community & Support
Each KewBot connects to a local gardening network, enabling elderly users to exchange tips, produce, and support.
Key Impact
- Enhanced physical mobility
- Reduced stress levels
- Stronger community bonds
- Sustainable living practices
- Boosted autonomy and daily structure
- Improved emotional and mental resilience
- Rewarding experience
- Accessibility

Impact & Vision
This experience gave me the opportunity to co-create in an intercultural setting, present to industry and government representatives, and contribute to a vision of design as a force for sustainable, human-centred futures.
"KewBot represents more than just a tool, it's a bridge between technology and human connection, supporting active ageing and community building in the cities of tomorrow."
